Hi, I've just returned to Sandboxie after some year's absence and need some updating. I'd like to use it for testing applications, but when I've done that once, deleted everything and want to sandbox something else , including FF, I get the message 'An error with Direct OCR caused a memory conflict in your open applications. Please restart Windows'. What's to be done?

Thanks for your answer. There is no Canon Easy Web-Print on my computer, but I discovered some left-over Dell printer software and uninstalled part of it ("Helpers" and something else) and it looks like that solved the problem. If not, I'll be back.

Let me know if you can identify the full name of that OCR software -- I could add it to the known conflicts page.

The culprit's name is Dell Photo AIO Printer 944. I can't recall exactly what I uninstalled (I didn't touch anything explicitly referring to OCR, actually) but if it would be of any use I did manage to restore the files deleted from the Dell folder. Just let me know.

Well, the thing I'm concerned with is how do I describe this entry in the Known Conflicts page. Do I say there's a conflict with a "Dell Photo AIO Printer 944"? I think it's not specific enough. If you can try to identify the software, that would be better. Either way it's fine though.

Direct OCR Error
An error with Direct OCR caused a memory conflict in your open applications. Please restart Windows.

apparently also happens if you have omnipage installed (which adds itself to computer startup and can be disabled with msconfig or a startup manager like winpatrol)

offending EXE: C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCANSOFT\OMNIPAGESE\OPWARE32.EXE
title: OCR Aware (32-bit)

When starting IE7 - I can confirm this conflict (XP SP3) and the fix - disable in msconfig. But mine has a different executable name;
C:\PROGRAM FILES\SCANSOFT\OMNIPAGESE\Opwarese2.Exe

Interesting that if I run the main program (Omnipage.Exe) it does not start the culprit program;Opwarese2.Exe

And if I start the culprit program sandboxed before starting IE, there is no error. Here is a description on the exe;

Thanks for that info. I've been experiencing intermittent Direct OCR errors, which were not connected with Canon Easy-Web Print, nor any of the other software listed on the http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?KnownConflicts link. However I discovered I did have ScanSoft OmniPage( v11.0) installed, dubious courtesy of the installation CD that came with my Canon IP4300 printer.

However I couldn't simply uninstall it using the Windows Add/remove programs facility, as I got a "fatal installation error" message. Somehow it seems it was only partially installed in the first place, so I had find the original CD and re-install it before only then was I able to uninstall it.

But the good news is that it does seem to have done the trick - I've had no more Direct OCR errors since. Very Happy

Perhaps it would be an idea to update that link to include OmniPage?

Yes and also I think that at one time there was only the error being reported that had to do with Canon, and so it was listed as a known conflict with the solution being to uninstall that program. With these additional reports, it may not be just Canon, but OCR aware programs in general. And maybe Tzuk can zero in from that angle. Also as a solution to the Canon error, maybe some componant of the Canon program can be disabled through msconfig, rather than uninstalling the program.

We only had this issue several times here but I can't recall anyone having second thoughts before uninstalling these utilities so I think suggesting to uninstall is quite reasonable.

And yes, I should revise the Known Conflicts page ... Certainly.

I think the suggestion should be to first look within the offending programs' settings for an option to turn off "OCR Aware" and then, if there is no option, to consider uninstalling the program. Also on the 'Known Conflicts' page, the indication is that the problem with Canon is the toolbar - it may be the toolbar also, but is also likely to be similar to the OmniPage cause.

OK, I will take in all this information, and see what to do about it.

have the same prob.

slowness caused by OmniPage SE4 that came with my Canon Laser MF printer.

It's the OPWareSE4.exe exe in startup that casued it. Prob is, I can't see any way in OmniPage options to disable it. There is no Tools/OCR Aware menu or option anywhere.

So, the only way to turn it off is I guess through msconfig..

Hopefully, there will be some other more formal resolution coming.

Thanks for the pointers and the help tkuz.
