How do I force run "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer" to run sandboxed? I can't seem to make it run sandboxed unless I specifically open a .jpg file sandboxed. Is there no way to force run it sandboxed? I can't seem to find the program it uses to force it to run sandboxed?

Somewhere in the board there is already a thread about this. AFAIR there is a .dll that is called to open "Windows Picture and Fax Viewer".

So it's not possible to force run Windows Picture and Fax Viewer sandboxed?

The reason I ask this is that I am wanting to force run everything in my C:\downloads folder sandboxed. It all seems to force run sandboxed (even .txt files) except for .jpg files that are opened by default with Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Any way around this?

The way around this is to install a third-party image viewer and set it as default association for your picture files. Then Explorer should actually run a program when you click on a JPG, this is something that Sandboxie can intercept, as opposed to Explorer using its built-in viewer.

That's what I feared you'd say, but then I have less fear now haha. What I'm going to do is just use the right-click command to run .jpg files sandboxed. If there are say 100 .jpg files, I'd simply put them in a folder, and run that folder sandboxed. Therefore, any .jpg files I open from there will run sandboxed, even if it's using Windows Picture and Fax Viewer. Good stuff right?

Tzuk, another issue here mate. Note I use Windows Media Player 11 as my default video player. With other video players, this problem doesn't seem to exist I don't think.

1. Force sandbox any folder
2. Put a .avi file into this folder
3. Run the .avi file - it will run unsandboxed!

BUT:

1. Force sandbox any folder
2. Put a .mp4 file into this folder
3. Run the .mp4 file - it will run sandboxed!

Who knows what other file types will run unsandboxed. The safest way is to always open a windows explorer sandboxed and run everything from there. That's a habit I'm going to get into for newly introduced files on my system.

You don't have to open a new topic for each file extension, the discussion is the same after all Smile

As for WMP/AVI/MP4/whatever. The rule is to use Process Explorer, and look if a new process is starting in response to your clicking on some file, and where does that process start (what is its "current directory" property).

What you will see is that in the case where files don't run forced, there is either no process, or (in the case of WMP11) it cannot be easily traced to the folder.

Thanks Tzuk, regardless, I'll be using the right-click option for opening newly introduced files on my system. That's until you somehow work things out haha.

Just curious if we ever worked things out regarding this issue? Smile

I've been using the right-click option as well for the time being but am curious to know any updates on the issue. By the way, I use myfax for all of my Faxing and Internet Fax needs.

Thanks in advance,

-Jim

The "issue" still exists. Latest thread on it is here:

Again, the feature (forced folder) is not reliable for non-EXE files. This means sometimes stuff will work, and sometimes it won't work, and it depends on how Windows Explorer opens the viewer program, and if Sandboxie can infer that it has anything to do with a forced folder.

If you're curious, there are old topics about this.

Short answer is you need to work around this behavior by using forced programs in addition to (or instead of) forced folders.
