1.
Concerning the loading time of Firefox I would like to add my own experience:
- Loading time outside of Sandboxie: about 5-6 seconds
- Loading time within Sandboxie: about 1 minute!
And I found out what's the reason in my case:
It is the add-on " Norton IPS 1.0" (Norton Intrusion Prevention System), which is part of "Norton Internet Security 2009". When I deactivate this add-on, Firefox starts within Sandboxie in about 10-12 seconds.
The problem is that for security reasons of course I would not like to deactivate this add-on permanently ...
2.
I would like to thank the posters for the following statements:
| Guest10 wrote: |

At least I'm not the only one this happens to, with a sandboxed Firefox. I estimated that about 6 seconds after Fx displays the home page (any home page) Fx goes to 99% cpu and stays there for 8-10 seconds. With a sandboxed IE or with an unsandboxed Fx, the cpu load gets high, but doesn't last very long. |
So now I (also) know that I am not the only user of Sandboxie having this problem. I can confirm from my own experience these statements.
Moreover something similar happens when opening for example the Windows Media Player within Sandboxie: The CPU of the wmplayer.exe goes up to 98-100% and remains there for a couple of seconds (not only 1 or 2 seconds as it happens outside of Sandboxie), and in this time all functions are blocked, the player does not react, whatever I click on.

It's good that you found out source of the conflict. Please try to use the Resource Access Monitor to get a list of resources that are needed during the start-up of Firefox.

I wasn't asked to, however, I did run the Resource Access Monitor. May I paste the results? It doesn't matter whether it is the start of a new sandbox, i.e. sandbox deleted, or just starting a new browsing session, the following times are the same. Starting Firefox sandboxed, home page MSN.com: Page renders in 11 seconds, 9 seconds later there is a 6 second freeze. It's this delayed freeze that is annoying since for all practical purposes, relegates session starts to 26 seconds. Unless I was completely out of it, versions of Ff and/or Sb did not have this issue months ago but I'm not sure when it started. I'm going to edit this in a moment and time loading not sandboxed. 4.5 seconds! Thank You!
I also should have mentioned this problem is on an XP, SP3, Pentium 4 desktop. I have an Acer laptop with an inexpensive AMD Dual Core Processor (Not 2X Dual Core) and Vista Home Premium and there isn't a problem. It's setup the same as the desktop with the exception of Avira Free instead of NOD32, everything else is the same.

I am the guest from Posting "Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:17 pm".
Ratchet, concerning the delayed freeze of Firefox within Sandboxie, I can confirm what you write:
| Quote: |
Unless I was completely out of it, versions of Ff and/or Sb did not have this issue months ago but I'm not sure when it started. |
Maybe the issue exists about 3-4 weeks now? I am also not sure.
(In case of the Windows Media Player, I have the impression that the freezing issue - at least on my computer - exists already for a longer time.)
I would also like to add that I made a test completely reinstalling Firefox (creating new profile etc.), but the "delayed freeze" appeared immediately again.
tzuk, before posting my results with the "Resource Access Monitor", in order to avoid misunderstandings just let me make clear again that I see two different issues:
Issue 1:
The delay in opening the Firefox-browser within Sandboxie when the add-on "Norton IPS 1.0" is activated (starting time in my case: 1 minute).
Issue 2:
The Firefox-browser or an application like Windows Media Player has already opened successfully within the sandbox, but after some seconds appears the problem which ratchet and guest10 already described very clearly: the "delayed freeze" and high CPU (which, by the way, seems to happen again, when for example the mp3 or the video played in the Windows Media Player ends: then again for a couple of seconds everything freezes).
So here are my results of using the "Resource Access Monitor" for 3 different situations. I hope this is the information you asked for, tzuk.
Situation 1:
Opening Firefox within Sandboxie, when "Norton IPS 1.0" is activated:

Looking just at the Firefox case for now, try this. Go to Sandboxie Control > Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > IPC Access > Direct Access, then add:
| *\BaseNamedObjects*\*_Norton_{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}_Norton_Definitions_IPSDefs_* |
(This is all on a single line.) Then click OK and restart your Firefox under Sandboxie. If it makes a difference, great! If not, please post the results of Resource Access Monitor.

Thank you for your help, tzuk.
Well, there is a certain difference, but not too big:
After having started the computer for the first time:
Starting time for Firefox within Sandboxie: about 45 seconds (instead of 1 minute).
The following starting times are about 20-25 seconds. (Without the addition in Sandboxie Control, it are 30-35 seconds, sometimes longer, up to 1 minute.)
Here a result of the Resource Access Monitor for starting Firefox within Sandboxie after adding the entry in Sandboxie Control:

First, I have to say that I just installed the trial of Norton Anti Virus 2009 (with the IPS thing), fully updated, and I don't see any time difference starting Firefox normally or under Sandboxie.
Having said that, here a few more resources you can try to add in IPC Access > Direct Access to see if they improve anything.

I did read not to run/post the "Resource Access Monitor" unless asked, however, I'm thinking this may help you. Once again here are the specifics:

Thank you, tzuk.
I added the resources you mentioned, but I cannot see an improvement.
As you say that you do not have any problems with the starting time of Firefox after having installed NIS 2009 + the IPS thing (and I have heard from another user the same), I fear that the problem is a specific one on my computer. My suspicion is now that the delay could be caused of some rests of the earlier version of Norton Internet Security (NIS 2008) that seem to have remained on my computer after installing NIS 2009. Perhaps a complete new installation of NIS 2009 would help, but that would be too much work. So I will (and can) live with the longer starting time of Firefox.
Thanks again for your help. And if possible and if you have enough time perhaps you can also look about the second problem mentioned in this thread: the "delayed freeze" after the start of certain applications. It seems that this problem has no connection with the use of Norton Internet Security.

I'm sorry. I hope you do eventually find the software that is causing this slowdown, such that when you deactivate or uninstall that software, Sandboxie goes faster. Then I may be able to install that other software myself, hopefully reproduce the problem, and discover its cause.

ratchet, go to Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > IPC Access > Direct Access, and add:
\RPC Control\MsMp-*
*\BaseNamedObjects*\ThreatfireApiHookIpc2Map
The first is Windows Defender, the second is (obviously) ThreatFire.

Can I see a new Resource Access Monitor log, with these settings in effect? It would help to confirm that you've entered the settings correctly. In case you did enter them correctly, the new log may reveal further resources that are needed.

@ rachet and the other posters with similar problems:
I have found the solution for my case:
Do you have installed on your computer the program "Spybot - Search & Destroy" (in my case: version 1.6.0)? And do you have activated in "Spybot" the feature "Immunization" ("Immunize"). If yes: undo (deactivate) the immunization. In my case this was the reason for the delays!
