I can also confirm on XP that, again, turning off the "next-generation Java Plug-in" allows Java to work without any special exclusions.

I'm on XP and neither sandboxed IE nor Firefox 3.0.4 have any trouble with that 'test Java version' page.

wraithdu,

1. Is it possible you have some add-ons to Java itself that may participate in causing this problem?
2. Do you have jre or jdk?
3. Can you please try the link with a sandboxed Internet Explorer?

1. Nope, no add-ons. Just a normal installation.
2. I have just the JRE.
3. IE freezes just the same on Vista as FF. And it works the same as FF when I disable the "next-generation plug-in" option.

java -version:
Code:
java version "1.6.0_10"
Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-b33)
Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b15, mixed mode, sharing)

tzuk,
Are you definitely trying with the "next-generation" option enabled?

Lemme try to get a windbg dump and see if that helps you...

Well, this was all I could get. I had to manually break after the freeze, so I'm not sure the stack trace is useful. Right where I had to break was where it froze.

Sorry, I forgot to mention earlier, that I never touched the "next gen" option, and it is (and has always been) enabled by default.

Your debug log shows "Unknown exception - code 000006ba" right after "rasadhlp.dll" is loaded. "RAS" DLLs sometimes have something to do with Internet access. So try this, when you get the initial breakpoint, type

Code:
sxe *

Before you type the initial g. This should get you a breakpoint as soon as "Unknown exception - code 000006ba". You could then type

Code:
k 99

To see which code path ended up with this error. May help.

Alright, here's 2 debug runs. The first is with the "next-gen" plugin enabled, run up to the point that firefox freezes. Note that on this run the first exception was on loading the browser to the default homepage, before ever visiting javatester.org.

The second is with the "next-gen" plugin DISabled, run up to the point where the browser has successfully loaded the javatester.org applet. Note that on this run there were 3 unhandled exceptions.

And finally, here's a debug run with the "next-gen" plugin enabled, but UNsandboxed, just for comparison.

Looks like the exception in the first debug trace has something to do with cryptography functions.
Do you have OpenProtectedStorage=yes in Sandboxie.ini?

In fact, can I see the Sandboxie.ini (at least the part related to the sandbox in which you're
having trouble) to see if I apply some of those options, do I get the error then?

Well, this topic may be a moot point now. Sun just released Java 6u11, and it works just fine on XP with the "next-gen" plugin enabled, as long as internet access is granted to "java.exe". This java.exe program was never launched sandboxed in 6u10, so there was nothing to allow internet access.

I'll check Vista in a little while, and check a few debug runs to see if there are still those exceptions I had before. But things are looking up!!

Damn, spoke too soon. Still freezes in Vista. There's no sandboxed "java.exe" that is loaded either, just the immediate freeze. Again, it will work with "next-gen" disabled. If there's anything new in a debug run, I'll post it.

EDIT: here it is for good measure.

Not entirely moot yet. I also experience the same problem on my Vista laptop, java update 11 made IE7 crashes in SBIE 3.30 too. However this does not happen with Opera.

I can reproduce this problem on Vista. Let me see what I can do about it.

Seems to be a problem with Sandboxie
not allowing the creation of anonymous pipes.

Not sure if this is a Vista specific issue,
but I only got in on my Vista system.

I fixed it, and I hope you will see the same
improvement in your systems when I release
the next beta version.
