The reason I did not update is the introduced requirement to reactivate after X period of time which would be a first for any software I ever used to be re activated just because time has passed. Should the terms of the activation finalize and settle down I might update at some point, but I don't see that happening for the moment. A one-time activation I could bear instead of having a possibility that Sandboxie suddenly stops to work because of the activation. This is because I rely heavily on the "force" feature. Bits, wuauserv and msiserver launch a Start.exe child process under SbieSvc.exe. After approximately 30 seconds the error message about the logon is being displayed. That's all. SharedAccess and Netlogon don't run in the sandbox so why bring them up. Under the sandbox, CryptSvc (SandboxieCrypto) runs under your standard user account. The others, including MSIServer, all run with SYSTEM privileges. And you were able to start CryptSvc but not any of the others. So again I am saying that apparently you can't get programs in the sandbox to run under LocalSystem. I am not sure why. For example one possible scenario: At some point, your security software popped a question that SbieSvc.exe is trying to run a program under LocalSystem, and you blocked it. Or maybe you enabled Drop Rights in Sandboxie and then you hid the messages that inform you that a service was blocked due to dropped rights. Therefore it seems to me the problem is not specifically with msiserver but rather something in your system is preventing Sandboxie from running programs under the LocalSystem account. Even when everything is working properly. So you can't consider this specific thing as any kind of indication of a problem. But what you can do is create a registry value DEBUG of type REG_DWORD and data 7 within the following registry key HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows\Installer As described here: http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/aa368263%28v=vs.85%29.aspx You can put this change in the real or sandboxed registry, it doesn't matter. Yes all MSI packages will fail. The error message is from trying to manually start the service with "net start msiserver". Do all of them show the same problem? Also one more thing to consider is maybe you changed some sandbox settings and this interferes with Windows Installer. Like you, I updated to version 4.5 of the installer some time ago. But something changed and now I can't use the Installer being fully updated on a Windows XP (32bit) either. My suspicion is that a Windows security update changed some authentication/privilege at one point because I could use the Installer before. Too bad I didn't notice the problem after installing many hotfixes so tracking it down isn't possible anymore. Upon starting the service inside a sandbox it gives this error code: "Could not start the window installer service on local computer Error : 1069: the service did not start due to logon failure" That's as far as I can go with finding whats wrong. So far I have tried to start the service on all my machines with the same result. The Windows Installer is working perfectly outside the Sandbox. Updating from Installer 3.1 to 4.5 also didn't change anything.
