Sandboxie Forum - New Version Keyscrambler v 2.5 Not Working When Sandboxed (6058) http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6058 en-us 90 Sat Aug 29, 2009 9:05 am Sat Aug 29, 2009 9:05 am dogdog: Problem Solution http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=40355#40355 Sat Aug 29, 2009 9:05 am http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=40355#40355 I have found the solution to the offending message from KeyScrambler. There is no need to change the KeyScrambler template within Sandboxie. The problem is solved by opening IE8 unsandboxed but not in a protected mode. The registry is then amended such that it is recognised when IE8 is opened sandboxed (and then in unprotected mode). For a more detailed explanation see below: In KeyScrambler versions before 2.5.0, the "What's New" page was displayed by the installer. This did not work well for systems that had multiple users, so KS changed the behavior. The location for KS Personal in the registry is "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QFX Software\KeyScrambler". When IE is in protected mode, KS redirects reads and writes of the registry to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\Software\QFX Software\KeyScrambler". The entry is simply "Version". The value before the prompt is the previous version (if any). Once the prompt is displayed, the current version is written. The default for IE8 is protected so when IE8 is opened unsandboxed in protected mode KS writes to "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\AppDataLow\Software\QFX Software\KeyScrambler". The first time this happens the offending message is displayed and the version is updated to the current version. The next time that IE8 is opened unsandboxed in protected mode KS recognises the setting in the registry and does not display the offending message again. When an application is opened sandboxed the registry (the required parts) is copied into the sandbox and any alterations are done to the version of the registry within the sandbox. When the application is closed and the contents of the sandbox deleted the registry changes made within the sandbox are lost. When IE8 is opened sandboxed it is not in protected mode (this change is made by Sandboxie) thus KS looks at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QFX Software\KeyScrambler" in the registry within the sandbox; the version is not current so the offending message is shown and the version within the sandboxed registry is updated so the message is not shown again for that session of the sandboxed IE8. However, when IE8 is closed and the sandbox is deleted the registry changes within the sandbox are lost. Then the next time that IE8 is opened sandboxed the offending message is shown again. The solution is to open IE8 unsandboxed not in a protected mode. Then the offending message is shown again and the registry entry at "HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\QFX Software\KeyScrambler" is updated. Then when IE8 is opened sandboxed (and the updated registry is copied into the sandbox) KS sees that the latest version appears at the registry entry for an unprotected IE8 and no offending message is shown. The above description is relevant for KeyScrambler Personal as an IE8 add-on. Some of the KS users on the Sandboxie Forum use KS Professional or KS Premium and they do not seem to have experienced my problem with the offending message. As these two versions are stand alone (rather than being IE8 add-ons) I suspect that these versions of KS write to a single area of the registry independent of whether IE8 is in a protected or an unprotected mode. If I am correct this explains why the users of KS Professional/Premium did not experience the problem of the offending message. dogdog: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39758#39758 Mon Aug 17, 2009 3:00 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39758#39758 ]]>Quoting Guest10: ]]>Looking at the latest Resource Access report, I also noticed that some of KeyScrambler's exclusions no longer showed as 'allowed'. They didn't show as denied, either. If you removed the Local Template from your main PC, I guess that might account for no message appearing. The offending message might be gone, but left unsaid is whether or not KeyScrambler is doing its scrambling work. I don't see how it can, without the necessary exclusions in Sandbox Settings. ]]> I have removed the Local Template from my PC. However, Sandboxie's Software Compatibility did detect KeyScrambler Personal and automatically applied the default configuration settings - "Template=KeyScrambler" was added under Global Settings in the Sandboxie ini file. When I open IE8 sandboxed the KeyScrambler icon shows as green in the system tray. When I type into an IE8 window I get the KeyScrambler overlay window and the encrypted key strokes show in the overlay window. This indicates that KeyScramber is working. Don't forget, I am using KeyScrambler Personal whereas I think that you are using KeyScrambler Premium or Professional. KeyScrambler Personal runs as an IE extension (or add-on) but Premium and Professional run as stand alone programs. Hence KS Personal does not need the same exclusions as KS Premium or Professional. This makes sense to me. OK?? The mystery of the offending message remains (and in paticular why it suddenly stopped appearing). I am awaiting a reply from KeyScrambler support. Will post again when I get a response. Then suddenly for no apparent reason (no changes made to PC's software) I suddenly stopped getting the offending KeyScrambler message on my main PC. On my main PC I am running latest KeyScramble version v 2.5.0.0 together with Vista Ultimate (IE8) and Sandboxie v 3.38. Hence the Resource Access Monitor log is as you describe. I then went back to my second PC (Vista Home Premium and IE8 and Sandboxie v 3.38 ). I upgraded KeyScrambler from v 2.4.1.1 (no offending message) to v 2.5.0.0. My second PC started producing the offending KeyScrambler message as before (message only when IE8 is sandboxed not when IE8 not sandboxed) . On my second PC I then tried adding Guest10's KeyScrambler Local Template and then added both: OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KeyScrambler* OpenIPcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KSIEParentEvent* to the KeyScrambler Local Template on second PC. It made no difference – the offending KeyScrambler message still appeared. There must be a rational explanation??? tzuk: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39716#39716 Sun Aug 16, 2009 7:27 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39716#39716 dogdog, your latest Resource Access Monitor log shows that none of the new KeyScrambler exclusions are in effect. Did you restart Windows, or something like that? ]]> I did, but I had restarted Windows many times previously without it getting rid of the offending KeyScrambler message, so it seems very unlikely that the change is due to a Windows restart. Guest10: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39706#39706 Sun Aug 16, 2009 12:36 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39706#39706 After updating to v 3.39.06: the Local Template for KeyScrambler is no longer needed. It must be 'Removed' in this order: ---- First, use Sandboxie's Configure > Edit Configuration Remove the line for the Local Template, under [GlobalSettings] (the line is shown below, in [color=red:32d90bb037]red[/color:32d90bb037]): (Be sure that the line you are removing has "Local_KeyScrambler" in it !) [GlobalSettings] ... [color=red:32d90bb037]Template=Local_KeyScrambler[/color:32d90bb037] Then use File > Save, to save the change. Then File > Exit. ---- Second, pick any one of your sandboxes, and then use Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local Click on "KeyScrambler", in the large box under "Local" Click on the "Remove" button. Click OK. When Sandboxie tells you: "Local application configuration 'Local_KeyScrambler' is now removed in all sandboxes. Would you like to completely delete this application configuration?" Click on the "Yes" button. ---- Info: It seems that if you try to Remove the Local Template, before you delete the line under [GlobalSettings], Sandboxie will tell you to use the Software Compatibility tool - since the Template is applied to ALL sandboxes. However, the Software Compatibility window, at Configure > Software Compatibility does not list the Local_KeyScrambler template. It only lists templates that are applied to all sandboxes, from templates.ini. So you can't remove the line that applies the Local_KeyScrambler template to all sandboxes (under [GlobalSettings]), that way. Which means that you must delete the line under [GlobalSettings], manually. That's why the steps that I listed above, should be followed, in that order. I even tried adding both: OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KeyScrambler* OpenIPcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KSIEParentEvent* to the KeyScrambler Local Template on second PC. It made no difference – the offending KeyScrambler message still appeared. Therefore went back to main PC. I created a brand new sandbox – “NewBox” . For NewBox I left everything as created (ie all Sandboxie defaults). I then opened IE8 in NewBox having activated the Resource Access Monitor. The offending KeyScrambler message did not appear. I then closed down IE8. The contents of the Resorce Monitor is posted below. I thought you might notice a difference to previous post of Resource Monitor contents which might explain what has changed to cause offending KeyScrambler message not to appear. I have some more feedback. 1. I tried uninstalling and reinstalling KeyScrambler Personal (I had actually tried this before). It made no difference – message appeared for sandboxed IE8 but no message for non-sandboxed IE8. [I think that I might have got this message for the unsandboxed IE8 on the first occasion that IE8 was opened after the KeyScrambler upgrade. However, the message does not appear for subsequent usage of unsandboxed IE8.] 2. Tried upgrading to KeyScrambler v 2.5.0.0 on second Vista PC (O/S = Vista Home Premium) and the same problem occurred. 3. Uninstalled KeyScrambler v 2.5.0.0 and reinstalled v 2.4.1.1 and the problem did not happen. Given that you had no problem with XP, there must be some specific interaction between KeyScrambler Personal and Sandboxie that manifests itself with Vista (but not with XP) and this interaction must be due to some change between KeyScrambler v 2.4.1.1 and v 2.5.0.0. However, I have no idea what to do next?? Any ideas would be very much appreciated. PS: Are you also using Internet Explorer 8?? Guest10: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39634#39634 Fri Aug 14, 2009 6:47 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39634#39634 Well, I uninstalled the Pro version and installed the Personal version of KS. I didn't allow KS to check if there were any updates available, during the install. Re-booted. Ran IE8 unsandboxed - KS worked fine. Ran 2 different unsandboxed Firefox profiles, each with the KS add-on installed - KS worked fine. I ran IE8 sandboxed using my DefaultBox - KS worked fine. I created a new "Test3" sandbox, and used it for IE8 - KS worked fine. Ran both Firefox profiles sandboxed, with KS's add-on, and both worked fine. In each of the above cases, the KS icon appeared in the system tray after the browser started, and turned green indicating it's protection is ON. I could see the scrambled keystrokes in the tray icon. I never did get any message about seeing what's new in KeyScrambler. In fact I can't even find a way to call up that message. I'm at a loss to know why you are having a problem. The Sandboxie exclusions developed by Ruhe, do work with the Personal version. And, as I said, I had no problem - at least on XP, if that matters, since I see that you use Vista. Going back to the Pro version (hopefully). [Edit]Back on the Pro version. I'm not too sure about the Personal version of KS, in that twice: unsandboxed Firefox either didn't show a window, or briefly opened and then quickly closed. The scrambling feature of KS worked when the window stayed open, though. Guest10: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39630#39630 Fri Aug 14, 2009 5:15 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39630#39630 Thanks, I got it. At first glance I don't see anything. There may be a file that needs to be updated, outside of the sandbox. If worst comes to worst, I may have to uninstall my Pro version and try the Personal version with IE. dogdog: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39627#39627 Fri Aug 14, 2009 3:52 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39627#39627 Reporting Back. Just to be sure I created a brand new sandbox – “NewBox” . For NewBox I left everything as created (ie all Sandboxie defaults) but added the KeyScrambler Local Template and activated this KeyScrambler Local Template for NewBox (local template as in previous post). I checked Sandboxie ini file and everything was in order. I then opened IE8 in NewBox having activated the Resource Access Monitor. KeyScrambler message appeared as previously described. I then said yes to “See what’s new in KeyScrambler 2.5.0.0) – a new IE8 tab then opened at http://www.qfxsoftware.com/KeyScrambler/whats_new.htm. I then closed down IE8. When IE8 is open KeyScrambler appears to be working fine – KeyScrambler icon in system tray is green and the encrypted keystrokes show in KeyScrambler’s overlay window. For some reason, I don't always get an indication that new messages have been added to the forum. It looks like you did everything right, although you didn't mention whether or not you started with an empty sandbox. Judging from your results, that may not make a difference. At this point I would be interested in seeing if anything shows up in Sandboxie's Resource Access Monitor's report. Start the Resource Access Monitor; start a sandboxed IE; and after your normal start page is complete, then close IE and copy the Resource Access Monitor's report into a message here. dogdog: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39621#39621 Fri Aug 14, 2009 11:14 am http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39621#39621 Any further thoughts/suggestions?? dogdog: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39610#39610 Thu Aug 13, 2009 2:55 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39610#39610 ]]>Quoting Guest10: ]]>How did your test of the added exclusions turn out? But I still got the message “See what’s new in KeyScrambler 2.5.0.0” – yes/no as described in my thread "KeyScrambler Annoyance in Sandboxie" http://sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=6061 I checked and when I open IE8 unsandboxed no problem (ie no message as described above). The sandboxed IE8 cannot detect that this message has already been shown; whereas the unsandboxed IE recognises that the message has been displayed before and does not show it a second time. Still not got the right settings for KeyScrambler Personal. Please help. Many thanks. PS: I had a further thought and added "OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KeyScrambler*" to the KeyScrambler Local Template just in case it was needed (presumably broader than the same line in Sandboxie KeyScrambler Template with * Mutex at the end. However, it made no difference and the problem remains. PPS: Are there others using KeyScrambler Peronal that are experiencing the same problem?? Do I need to do something to include tzuk's line or is it included by having both the Local Template and tzuk's template (which is included automatically)?? ]]>If you are using the 3.39.xx version, you may want to wait to see if the next version includes an update to tzuk's KeyScrambler template. If it does, then you won't have to do anything but update to that version. If not ... --------------------- First, some general info: My local template instructions didn't take into account that someone might be using the "Personal" version of KeyScrambler. That version may not be detected by Sandboxie's "Software Compatibility" routine, and you probably would not already have tzuk's KeyScrambler template set up for use in ALL sandboxes. Since you use the "Personal" edition of KeyScrambler: You have probably added tzuk's "KeyScrambler" template to the Sandbox Settings, for each of your sandboxes where you want to use it, on an individual basis. (using Sandbox Settings > Applications > Security/Privacy > "KeyScrambler" > Add) Each of the individual sandboxes, where you have added tzuks' "KeyScrambler" to the Sandbox Settings", will have the line Template=KeyScrambler if you look at the settings for each sandbox, using Configure > Edit Configuration. If you wanted to do so, you could apply tzuk's KeyScrambler template to ALL sandboxes by putting that line under the [GlobalSettings] section, [u:fdeb8843f5]instead of[/u:fdeb8843f5] having it listed in each sandbox's configuration, like this: [GlobalSettings] Template=KeyScrambler In that case, you would [u:fdeb8843f5]not[/u:fdeb8843f5] have the line in the settings for each individual sandbox. It would apply to all sandboxes, existing now or created in the future. The latest version of KeyScrambler still needs some additional exclusions though, which is why I added my own local template as a temporary fix. ------------------- In answer to your two questions, above: Yes, the code is added to "sandboxie.ini". If added manually, put the Local Template lines at the end of the file, separated by one blank line, from the last line in the file. Or, you can add the Local Template this way: 1) Choose any one of your sandboxes - it doesn't matter which one, since the resulting lines will wind up at the end of the sandboxie.ini file regardless of which sandbox you choose. 2) Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local > "Create New" button 3) Paste or type the following lines into the window:[code:1:fdeb8843f5][Template_Local_KeyScrambler] Tmpl.Title=KeyScrambler OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KSEncStatusEvent OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KSProcEvent* OpenIpcPath=*\BaseNamedObjects*\KSEncryptionEvent* Tmpl.Class=Local [/code:1:fdeb8843f5]4) Click OK, then close the Sandbox Settings window. ------------- After adding the local template, you need to do one of the following: 1) (If you want to keep your KeyScrambler exclusions on a per-sandbox basis, as you are used to doing) You can go to the Sandbox Settings, for each sandbox that already specifies "KeyScrambler" (that would show under Sandbox Settings > Applications > Security/Privacy > "KeyScrambler" with a "+" sign next to it) Then for [u:fdeb8843f5]each one[/u:fdeb8843f5] of those sandboxes, you can add the [u:fdeb8843f5]local[/u:fdeb8843f5] template by using Sandbox Settings > Applications > [u:fdeb8843f5]Local[/u:fdeb8843f5] > select the [u:fdeb8843f5]local[/u:fdeb8843f5] template by selecting "KeyScrambler" from this list, and "Add" it. After tzuks' template is revised to add the additional exclusions, the template called "[Template_Local_KeyScrambler]" will no longer be needed. It can be selected under: Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local > "KeyScrambler" and then click on "Remove", for each sandbox where it was added. Then the local template called "[Template_Local_KeyScrambler]"can also be "Removed", once it is no longer being used: Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local select the local template "KeyScrambler" and "Remove" it. ------ or, 2) You can just specify that all sandboxes can use the Local Template, as a temporary fix. You don't have to add it individually to each sandbox, if you just add the local template's name under the [GlobalSettings] section. Add the line, as shown, to any lines that are already listed under GlobalSettings: [GlobalSettings] Template=Local_KeyScrambler (Please note that the above line has " Local_ " in it. That differentiates it from tzuk's template) After tzuks' template is revised to add the additional exclusions, the line "Template=Local_KeyScrambler" will no longer be needed in the [GlobalSettings] section, and can be deleted. The local template "[Template_Local_KeyScrambler]" itself will no longer be needed, and can be "Removed": Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local select the local template "KeyScrambler" and "Remove" it. ------ or, 3) You can add the names of tzuk's KeyScrambler template and the Local_KeyScrambler template, under [GlobalSettings]. That way, they would apply globally to all sandboxes, now and in the future, and each sandbox would not need to have its own exclusion listed for KeyScrambler: [GlobalSettings] Template=KeyScrambler Template=Local_KeyScrambler Before adding the line "Template=KeyScrambler" as shown above (for tzuk's template), I would go to each individual sandbox and remove the setting for KeyScrambler from each sandbox where it is used: Sandbox Settings > Applications > Security/Privacy Select "KeyScrambler", and then click on Remove. Then add the two lines under [GlobalSettings], using Configure > Edit Configuration: [GlobalSettings] Template=KeyScrambler Template=Local_KeyScrambler When tzuk's KeyScrambler template is revised, to add the additional exclusions, you would then delete the line for the Local Template: Template= Local_ KeyScrambler from the [GlobalSettings] section, and "Remove" the template called "[Template_Local_KeyScrambler]" by using Sandbox Settings > Applications > Local select the local template "KeyScrambler" and "Remove" it. dogdog: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39495#39495 Tue Aug 11, 2009 9:53 am http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=39495#39495 ]]>Quoting Guest10: ]]>See the additional exclusion list that Ruhe posted, near the end of this thread: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?t=5755 Personally, I created a Local Template with the additional exclusions, and then added the Local Template name under [GlobalSettings], until the exclusions in the templates.ini file can be revised by tzuk.
