I added the resources you mentioned, but I cannot see an improvement. As you say that you do not have any problems with the starting time of Firefox after having installed NIS 2009 + the IPS thing (and I have heard from another user the same), I fear that the problem is a specific one on my computer. My suspicion is now that the delay could be caused of some rests of the earlier version of Norton Internet Security (NIS 2008) that seem to have remained on my computer after installing NIS 2009. Perhaps a complete new installation of NIS 2009 would help, but that would be too much work. So I will (and can) live with the longer starting time of Firefox. Thanks again for your help. And if possible and if you have enough time perhaps you can also look about the second problem mentioned in this thread: the "delayed freeze" after the start of certain applications. It seems that this problem has no connection with the use of Norton Internet Security. ratchet: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=36032#36032 Sun Apr 26, 2009 5:29 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=36032#36032 I did read not to run/post the "Resource Access Monitor" unless asked, however, I'm thinking this may help you. Once again here are the specifics: It doesn't matter whether it is the start of a new sandbox, i.e. sandbox deleted, or just starting a new browsing session, the following times are the same. Starting Firefox sandboxed, home page MSN.com: Page renders in 11 seconds, 9 seconds later there is a 6 second freeze. It's this delayed freeze that is annoying since for all practical purposes, relegates session starts to 26 seconds. Unless I was completely out of it, versions of Ff and/or Sb did not have this issue months ago but I'm not sure when it started. I'm going to edit this in a moment and time loading not sandboxed. 4.5 seconds! Thank You! I also should have mentioned this problem is on an XP, SP3, Pentium 4 desktop. I have an Acer laptop with an inexpensive AMD Dual Core Processor (Not 2X Dual Core) and Vista Home Premium and there isn't a problem. It's setup the same as the desktop with the exception of Avira Free instead of NOD32, everything else is the same. Go to Sandboxie Control > Sandbox Settings > Resource Access > IPC Access > Direct Access, then add: [code:1:46b36488a6]*\BaseNamedObjects*\*_Norton_{0C55C096-0F1D-4F28-AAA2-85EF591126E7}_Norton_Definitions_IPSDefs_*[/code:1:46b36488a6] (This is all on a single line.) Then click OK and restart your Firefox under Sandboxie. If it makes a difference, great! If not, please post the results of Resource Access Monitor. : http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35948#35948 Sat Apr 25, 2009 12:09 am http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35948#35948 I am the guest from Posting "Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:17 pm". Ratchet, concerning the delayed freeze of Firefox within Sandboxie, I can confirm what you write: [quote:f43b309de9] Unless I was completely out of it, versions of Ff and/or Sb did not have this issue months ago but I'm not sure when it started.[/quote:f43b309de9] Maybe the issue exists about 3-4 weeks now? I am also not sure. (In case of the Windows Media Player, I have the impression that the freezing issue - at least on my computer - exists already for a longer time.) I would also like to add that I made a test completely reinstalling Firefox (creating new profile etc.), but the "delayed freeze" appeared immediately again. tzuk, before posting my results with the "Resource Access Monitor", in order to avoid misunderstandings just let me make clear again that I see two different issues: Issue 1: The delay in opening the Firefox-browser within Sandboxie when the add-on "Norton IPS 1.0" is activated (starting time in my case: 1 minute). Issue 2: The Firefox-browser or an application like Windows Media Player has already opened successfully within the sandbox, but after some seconds appears the problem which ratchet and guest10 already described very clearly: the "delayed freeze" and high CPU (which, by the way, seems to happen again, when for example the mp3 or the video played in the Windows Media Player ends: then again for a couple of seconds everything freezes). So here are my results of using the "Resource Access Monitor" for 3 different situations. I hope this is the information you asked for, tzuk. May I paste the results? It doesn't matter whether it is the start of a new sandbox, i.e. sandbox deleted, or just starting a new browsing session, the following times are the same. It's setup the same as the desktop with the exception of Avira Free instead of NOD32, everything else is the same. tzuk: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35933#35933 Fri Apr 24, 2009 9:37 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35933#35933 It's good that you found out source of the conflict. Please try to use the Resource Access Monitor to get a list of resources that are needed during the start-up of Firefox. http://www.sandboxie.com/index.php?ResourceAccessMonitor : http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35927#35927 Fri Apr 24, 2009 8:17 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=35927#35927 1. Concerning the loading time of Firefox I would like to add my own experience: - Loading time outside of Sandboxie: about 5-6 seconds - Loading time within Sandboxie: about 1 minute ! And I found out what's the reason in my case: It is the add-on " Norton IPS 1.0 " (Norton Intrusion Prevention System), which is part of "Norton Internet Security 2009". When I deactivate this add-on, Firefox starts within Sandboxie in about 10-12 seconds. The problem is that for security reasons of course I would not like to deactivate this add-on permanently ... 2. I would like to thank the posters for the following statements: ]]>Quoting Guest10: ]]> ]]>Quoting ratchet: ]]>... Anyway, loads it Sb in seven seconds, seven seconds later Ff uses 100% CPU rendering all functions useless for six seconds. ]]>At least I'm not the only one this happens to, with a sandboxed Firefox. I estimated that about 6 seconds after Fx displays the home page (any home page) Fx goes to 99% cpu and stays there for 8-10 seconds. With a sandboxed IE or with an unsandboxed Fx, the cpu load gets high, but doesn't last very long. ]]> So now I (also) know that I am not the only user of Sandboxie having this problem. :) I can confirm from my own experience these statements. Moreover something similar happens when opening for example the Windows Media Player within Sandboxie: The CPU of the wmplayer.exe goes up to 98-100% and remains there for a couple of seconds (not only 1 or 2 seconds as it happens outside of Sandboxie), and in this time all functions are blocked, the player does not react, whatever I click on. ratchet: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33979#33979 Tue Mar 10, 2009 7:29 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33979#33979 ]]>Quoting TWL845: ]]> ]]>Quoting Anonymous: ]]>"IE is embedded in Windows so is mostly already loaded before you click the IE icon to go on line" that was my point friend. this startup delay has less to do with SBIE and more to do with the way firefox starts up. Firefox reads a LOT of data off the disk on startup. With sbie its reading off coupla locations ie programfiles\mozilla, documentsettings\appdata, sbie\documentssettings\appdata. If you CLEAR the sandbox everytime then EVERYTIME firefox startsup it creates a lot of directories and files (19 files 23 folders occupying 3mb on my setup) so it'll definetly take time to loadup. Now lets down to brass-tacks.. *grin*. if you are using a real-time anti virus and or more products hips, etc etc then all that data's read again.... so it'll definetly be slow. 27secs is a lot... my normal startup's 5-8 and sbie startup is 8-10. i don't use any other product except Com0d0 internet security (which is pretty light IMO). I just keep it as my HP because A) I actually do like its layout and B) My wife uses hotmail (the worst of the web mails) so it's convenient for her. Anyway, loads it Sb in seven seconds, seven seconds later Ff uses 100% CPU rendering all functions useless for six seconds. I time this with my cell phone. Not Sboxed, Ff goes to 88% for what seems like less than one second, quicker than I can time it anyway. I tried flash block, disabled Ff extensions and plugins and disabled anti-malwares and firewall but cannot change the behavior. Also, this only occurs with MSN, not any other website that I've tried. Six additional seconds is a small price to pay I suppose! : http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33802#33802 Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:50 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33802#33802 I get slow loading time also, but only with latest version.Previus version starts fast VJ: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33799#33799 Thu Mar 05, 2009 6:04 pm http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33799#33799 "If I close FF and re-load it, it starts in 4 seconds." - thats true for EVERY windows program since the Pentium-II era i.e 1999. Start it once.. shut it down.. start it again.. faster. Why? I think its something to do with prefetching and loading from ram/page file. When you run a program it loads into ram/pagefile and stays there. After you shut it, i think windows dosent clear the area immediately so if you start the program again it loads super fast from there. This is a non-issue. Regarding the firefox 27seconds: I've posted about this before. I've a 5yr old p-mobile-1.6, 1gbram, xpsp3, 40gbhdd 4800... ps. try this with IE .. it should load up almost at the same time with or without sandboxie.... report back. thanks for reading. tzuk: http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33775#33775 Thu Mar 05, 2009 10:44 am http://www.sandboxie.com/phpbb/viewtopic.php?p=33775#33775 So at least we know that Sandboxie doesn't have an effect on programs not running under its supervision. Which is what I expected. As for the 27 seconds, can only repeat what I suggested earlier, that it may be related to some add-on or extension. Can you try running a sandboxed Firefox in Firefox Safe Mode, so no add-ons at all are loaded by Firefox? If you then see Firefox starting in four seconds, then it would confirm the delay is caused by an add-on.
